Happy New Year to everyone from a very wet and soggy Coombeshead Farm!
Although we spent much of December snowed in, we had a lovely Christmas; the
scenery was quite stunning and it made for a beautiful snowy setting for
those of our guests that could get here. Unfortunately it meant travelling
to and from Chudleigh in the tractor, or by foot, making Christmas shopping
a little complicated, but different!
Temperatures have now risen, and for the time being we have rain, although
the Met. Office reliably inform us there is more snow on the way. As long
as we have a warm summer, I don’t think any of us mind too much.
Every newsletter recently has a sad note and unfortunately this time it is
to let those of yo u
that didn’t visit this summer, know of the untimely death of Billy
Wizz. He was only 4 years old, and died very quickly of natural causes.
His reason for living was to fetch sticks as all children, and many adults
learnt, and he did so till his last day.
Bramble pined desperately and we now have Tizzy, a rescue Welsh Springer
Spaniel. She is very much the lady, but is learning to play, although she
still doesn’t retrieve anything. Bramble has qualified for Crufts this
year, so George will be making the journey in March. We still can’t believe
that such a scruffy, dirty and naughty puppy can impress any judge!
All the sheep are now pregnant, including Lola, and are due to give birth
around April time. The father is our own resident ram, Merlin, who moved in
with us last Spring .
Teapot and Mabel are just about fully grown; their behaviour has improved,
but they still have moments of pure teenage attitude! We can’t say that for
the goats, though, as they continue to do everything they shouldn’t and
nothing they should…especially when trying to help Peter laying the
hedges…help is definitely NOT wanted.
Cider making this year was a huge success. We
made 220 gallons of cider, not including many more that our helpers took
home as ‘payment’. It will be ready to drink ‘when the blossom is on the
apple trees’, so if you are here late May/early June, please join in with
the cider tasting picnic in the orchard (Cider drinking is not compulsory!).
All the cottages now have double-glazed windows and doors, very welcome for
our winter guests. We still have a long list of jobs to do but we feel as
if we are making progress, without ruining the unspoilt at mosphere
here.
The games barn has sofas and chairs as well as games,
and was used for relaxing in the summer evenings as well as during the
days. We won’t list everything we have done in the last year; we have been
working all year and can’t remember most of the jobs so please visit and
judge for yourselves!
Hopefully see you later in the year.
Very best regards
Julie, Peter, Harry and George… Bramble and Tizzy.
